Shane Gillis Called Women at the Gym "Whores" on SNL and the Backlash Isn't Just About the Joke

Shane Gillis returned to Saturday Night Live for his third hosting gig this weekend, and his opening monologue is still dominating every feed. The comedian told the audience that women who wear short shorts to the gym dress like“whores,”adding that their clothing comes in“artificial bait colors.”The joke landed with a thud online, where female comedians including Phoebe Robinson and Hannah Jones called it lazy, misogynistic, and simply not funny.

What made the moment land harder is who’s telling it. SNL fired Gillis in 2019 before he ever performed, after an anti-Asian slur surfaced from his podcast. He apologized, built one of the biggest careers in comedy, and the show brought him back anyway. That history makes the“he’s being silenced”defense hard to square with reality. Writer Jessica Valenti went further, arguing that calling women“whores”and their clothes“bait”is a textbook description of rape culture, and that SNL should be ashamed for platforming it.

The timing is the other piece here. The monologue aired while the country is deep in a national conversation about sexual assault, including a 2024 alleged gang rape at Cornell at the center of a lawsuit. That context is why this isn’t fading quietly, and why the debate isn’t really about one punchline. It’s about what late-night TV chooses to amplify, and who gets a platform three times over.

So we want to know: where do you draw the line between edgy comedy and outright misogyny? Drop your take in the comments.
