The Caribbean Music Awards are making history with their move to Trinidad&Tobago. The fourth annual ceremony will take place Sept. 19 at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain, marking the first time the event has ever been held in the Caribbean. It’s part of a larger“Elite Weekend Experience”that includes cultural events and a steelpan showcase, so you know they’re going all out.
Shyne, the rapper turned Belizean politician, will receive the Global Ambassador Honor, while Patra earns the Lifetime Achievement Honor. Calypso Rose, who famously made her Coachella debut at 78, takes home the Elite Calypso Honor, and Alan Cavé is honored with the Elite Konpa Honor. The timing on that one is perfect, because the awards just added konpa song of the year as a brand new category, alongside zess and dennery. Lady Lava leads all nominees with nine nods, while Machel Montano, V’ghn and Ayetian each have seven.
Nailah Blackman is co-hosting the event, and she’s been through every stage of it. She’s been a fan, a performer, a nominee and a winner, so she knows the experience from every angle. The move from Brooklyn to Trinidad is a statement that Caribbean music deserves to be celebrated at home. Which of these honorees are you most excited about? Drop your pick in the comments.
