Oklahoma Tribes Add $23.4 Billion to State Economy, Including Right Here in Southwest Oklahoma

A new report from the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association reveals just how big a role tribal nations play in the state’s economy: 139,860 jobs, $7.8 billion in wages and benefits, and $23.4 billion in total economic output. That ranking puts Oklahoma tribal nations among the state’s Top 10 industries, right up there with sectors people usually name first.

Locally, the Comanche Nation’s casinos, cattle operation, and hemp and wheat production are part of that statewide picture. The Chickasaw Nation, meanwhile, operates more than 100 businesses and employs over 15,000 people, and new Governor Chris Anoatubby, who succeeded his father Bill after 39 years, says the tribe is expanding health care too, breaking ground this year on a new medical center in Newcastle. Leaders credit tribal enterprises with drawing visitors and reinvesting dollars into local workforces.

For listeners in Lawton, the takeaway is simple: tribal businesses are not separate from the community economy. They’re a working part of it, funding paychecks across Comanche County and beyond. Have you or someone you know worked for a tribal enterprise here in southwest Oklahoma? We’d love to hear your story.
