Holly Hill taught at Elgin Elementary since 2019, and she spent those years doing the quiet work teachers do: looking out for kids, covering gaps, showing up. She died on Oct. 23, 2025, from complications tied to a Valentine’s Day 2023 incident in which reports say a restaurant served her industrial-grade degreaser instead of margarita mix concentrate. Her family is choosing to answer that loss with something that helps children.
Through a Facebook fundraiser, the family is selling T-shirts and decals, with orders accepted through Nov. 20. Proceeds cover lunch charges and other fees for students at Elgin schools. Kelly Hunter, Holly’s mother and the organizer, told local reporters the goal is simple:“We want the kindness of Holly to live on and for her to be remembered.”
Lunch debt is one of those quiet pressures that families in Elgin know well, and a covered charge can change a kid’s whole school day. Have you ordered a shirt yet, or is there a teacher from your own school days you’d want to honor this way? Let us know on our Facebook page.
