Getting Led Zeppelin to license“Stairway to Heaven”is one of those things that basically never happens. The band has guarded that song for over fifty years. But Greta Gerwig didn’t just send an email. She met with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in person, and she walked away with a yes for the first trailer of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
So why did they agree? According to Gerwig, the rock legends love C.S. Lewis. She told Stephen Colbert she was“so moved that they allowed me to use this song,”and it makes sense once you hear it. The trailer’s climax features Meryl Streep voicing Aslan as the music swells, all wrapped in the kind of psychedelic visuals that feel like a nod to the song’s 1971 roots.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew opens in theaters on February 12, 2027, and arrives on Netflix April 2. It’s a pretty perfect pairing: one of the most requested rock songs in radio history backing one of the most beloved fantasy stories of all time. What do you think, does“Stairway”belong in Narnia, or should they have gone with something else? Sound off in the comments.
