Reddit User Skips the Tip, Waitress Confronts a Friend Instead, and the Friend Group Implodes

A Reddit user in r/EndTipping says they left the tip line blank on a roughly $30 bill shared with five friends as a protest against tipping culture. According to the post, the waitress didn’t let it slide. She approached one friend about the missing tip, and that friend handed over $10. The table had opinions about that, and so did the internet.

The drama grew when a friend who had worked as a server accused the poster of hurting restaurant workers. The poster ended up embarrassed, admitted they’d probably tip next time just to avoid the argument, and asked the forum whether they were actually wrong. The thread pulled 482 upvotes and 219 comments, and commenters were split between“stand your ground”and“keep your friends out of your protest.”

If you’re still sorting out how you feel about tipping, the timing is interesting. The IRS treats tips as voluntary payments, which is the argument a lot of no-tippers lean on, but restaurant workers point out that voluntary doesn’t pay rent. Where do you land on the split-bill tipping debate? Tell us in the comments.
