Lucian Piane, the composer and producer who worked on RuPaul’s Drag Race from Season 1 through Season 8, has died at 46. According to reports, Piane was hit by a car Monday morning in Glendale, California. First responders attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was listed as blunt trauma and ruled an accident.

Piane was a defining part of Drag Race’s early musical identity, producing RuPaul’s tracks and appearing on the show as a judge. World of Wonder honored him in an Instagram statement Tuesday, saying the team was devastated and that Piane“left behind a legacy of truly beautiful music.”In the days before his death, Piane had been taken into custody twice, including for being under the influence and for an alleged assault on emergency personnel. Fans had also been voicing concern over recent videos he posted on Instagram.

His death touches not just drag culture but pop music at large, and it raises hard questions about how we support public figures in crisis. If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction or mental health, help is available: call or text 988 in the US, any time, free and confidential.
