The“Children of Blood and Bone”adaptation has a story behind the story, and it’s complicated. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood took the stage at New York Comic Con on October 10 and praised Tomi Adeyemi’s novel, telling the audience that everything in those pages is what makes a great film. It was a heartfelt moment from a director who clearly loves the source material.

But Adeyemi, the author and an executive producer on the film, publicly distanced herself from the adaptation back in July. She described panic attacks and said she left the set hyperventilating and sobbing, adding that she won’t watch or promote the movie. She also canceled a NYCC panel for her new book“The Siren”for reasons that haven’t been confirmed. Prince-Bythewood, meanwhile, called the adaptation process“beautiful”in an ELLE interview, creating a striking contrast between the two perspectives.

The film boasts a powerhouse cast: Thuso Mbedu as Zélie, plus Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, and Cynthia Erivo. It opens in theaters January 15, 2027. With so much talent attached and a bestselling book behind it, the anticipation is real, even if the road to release has been rocky.

Are you planning to see“Children of Blood and Bone”when it drops, or does the behind-the-scenes drama change how you feel about it?
