A viral video of double-decker airplane seats has Reddit divided, and honestly, both sides have a point. The design, called Chaise Longue, stacks one row of economy seats above another, which means the bottom passengers get a whole lot of legroom and the top passengers get, well, a view. Commenters wasted no time, and one line about“farts to the face on an 8-hour flight”is already doing numbers.
The concept comes from Spanish designer Alejandro Núñez Vicente, who is 6’2″and got tired of squeezing into economy seats, so he started sketching in 2020. A new prototype was shown at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg in April, adding more space around the lower seats and a panel behind the upper row. Before any of this reaches a real cabin, though, it has to clear FAA crashworthiness and evacuation standards, including a 90-second evacuation demonstration for aircraft with more than 44 seats.
So far, no airline has publicly committed to installing the seats, but Núñez Vicente hopes to have a preproduction prototype ready for the 2027 expo. Would you trade legroom for a seat under a stranger, or is that a hard pass? Drop your answer in the comments.
