Peacock is taking us back to Camp Crystal Lake, but not the way you’d expect.Crystal Lakepremieres Oct. 15 and stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, the mother of Jason and the franchise’s original killer. Set in the 1970s, the series shows us a Jason who’s alive, sweet, and talkative, a kid with a misshapen head and one loyal friend. Then he seemingly drowns at camp, his body is never recovered, and Pamela’s grief turns into an unshakable belief that her son is still out there.

Reviews so far are mixed. The New York Post calls the series middling, noting the plot meanders unevenly before hitting its stride in the penultimate episode, which finally unpacks Pamela’s backstory. But the review also says it’s a worthy entry for fans who want kills and thrills, and Cardellini’s performance is a big reason to stick with it.

The bigger question is whetherFriday the 13thworks better as a movie than a season-long show. With twelve films behind it, this is the franchise’s first major TV prequel, so fan reaction will say a lot about what comes next.

Are you planning to streamCrystal Lakethis week, or are you skipping it until the reviews settle?
