Character.ai Bankruptcy: Why AI Companions Leave You Lonelier Than Ever

Character.ai, one of the biggest AI companion apps in the world, filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 11, 2026, citing legal, regulatory and operational headwinds. The company and Google face a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of a Florida teen who died by suicide. The filing marks a turning point for an industry that exploded to 337 active AI companion apps by 2025.

The appeal of these apps is obvious: constant attention, zero conflict, total validation. But psychologists say that’s exactly the problem. An AI companion is a sycophant by design, which means it never disagrees, never needs anything, and never gives you a chance to grow. Psychotherapist Avigail Lev has said a relationship with a sycophant isn’t a relationship. Dr. Nick Bach adds that when the AI removes the mismatch, there’s nothing to repair and nothing to learn.

The data is sobering. Nearly one in three young men report chatting with an AI romantic partner, yet Stanford research found users with weak social networks felt lonelier after using AI chatbots. Some people have even held marriages with AI companions, though they aren’t legally recognized. With the Character.ai bankruptcy making headlines, the bigger question is whether convenience has quietly replaced connection. What do you think: can an AI ever be a real relationship, or is it just a really good mirror?
