One Reddit user in India logged onto r/corporate and asked the question so many people think but never type: why do people take ordinary corporate jobs so seriously? Their post, titled“I genuinely don’t understand people who take corporate jobs this seriously,”went up on Sept. 21 and pulled in 383 comments from people who clearly needed to vent.

Their complaints hit close to home. False urgency. Staying late because everyone else is still at their desks. Managers who enforce rules for the sake of enforcing them. The moment that summed it all up: they left early on a Friday, and their manager called to question why. Every leave request, they said, turns into a full approval process. Their bottom line was blunt and relatable:“I just can’t make myself care that much about a company that doesn’t belong to me.”

They also asked whether work culture is actually different in Australia, Europe, or North America. One of the most popular answers in the comments pointed to something simpler: some people just enjoy being above others in the hierarchy. So, where do you land? Would you have stayed late, or would you have taken the early exit?
