What It Takes: Inside the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's Most Demanding Training

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s 75th Academy class just reached a milestone in their training that many police academies consider one of the most challenging exercises on the curriculum. Cadets completed a defensive tactics scenario that required them to experience pepper spray exposure firsthand and then immediately demonstrate their ability to safely arrest a subject, secure handcuffs, and communicate with dispatch while managing the effects of the spray. This isn’t hazing or tradition for tradition’s sake. It’s purposeful, evidence-based training designed to prepare officers for the reality of traffic stops and field encounters where situations escalate quickly and officers must remain mentally sharp despite physical stress.

The Highway Patrol emphasizes that this training is essential because troopers typically work alone during their shifts. Unlike officers working in pairs or teams, Highway Patrol officers conducting traffic stops are often by themselves when situations become tense or dangerous. They need to know, without question, that they can handle high-stress encounters, stay focused, and make sound decisions even when their body is experiencing acute stress responses. The pepper spray training component forces this reality into sharp focus and builds the muscle memory and mental toughness these officers will rely on throughout their careers.

The 75th Academy class will graduate on August 21st, 2026, and these cadets will become part of the patrol units protecting Lawton and highways across Oklahoma.
