Construction crews working on the Firehawk Aerospace complex in northwest Lawton are back at full speed after last week’s rain cost the project a couple of days. Crews returned to the 320-acre site north of the Goodyear plant on Monday to pump water before resuming work, and the project remains on schedule.
The heavy lifting on the land itself is finished. More than 130,000 cubic yards of earth have been excavated and stabilized, and contractors are now focused on Buildings 4, 5 and 6. Those structures feature foundations up to four feet thick and walls up to 33 inches thick, with semi-truck loads of steel reinforcement arriving daily. Utility work at the site is 80% complete, and the finished complex will include 16 buildings plus a guard shack on land owned by the Lawton Economic Development Authority.
The project is one of the biggest economic development bets in the city, backed by up to $22 million in state grant money through LEDA. Firehawk, described as the third-largest manufacturer of solid rocket fuel in the U.S., has said the location makes sense because Fort Sill is the training base for the missile systems the company is developing design concepts for. What are you hoping this project means for Lawton’s future?
