Tom Cruise reportedly went into full panic mode in 2007 when he learned Andrew Morton was writing an unauthorized biography about him. According to biographer and friend J. Randy Taraborrelli, Cruise called him repeatedly and invited him to his Beverly Hills home, where Taraborrelli met Katie Holmes for the first time. Cruise wanted advice. Taraborrelli’s answer was simple: you can’t control the book, so let it happen.

After Morton’s book hit shelves, Cruise sent Taraborrelli a bottle of Macallan whisky with a note that read“Let it happen.”It was a callback, a thank-you, and honestly a pretty great punchline all at once. Morton later told Page Six that Cruise’s lawyer sent him a hostile letter and that he worried about being sued by the star.

It’s a rare peek behind the curtain at how celebrities react when someone decides to tell their story without permission. Reps for Cruise haven’t commented on the story. What’s your take: would you want to know everything written about you, or would you rather let it happen?
