Sylvester Stallone just gave fans the full story of his decades-long rivalry with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it’s as dramatic as any of their movies. On“The Rest Is Entertainment”podcast, the 80-year-old actor said the feud was“very contentious, trust me, which I enjoyed.”It started with dirty looks at the Golden Globes and escalated when Stallone threw a bowl of flowers at Schwarzenegger at an event. In his words:“The gauntlet was thrown, and it was on.”

The competition played out at the box office through the 1980s, with both stars pushing for bigger stunts and higher body counts to claim the action crown. It even complicated things when they co-launched Planet Hollywood in 1991, since sharing a stage was easier said than done. The rivalry finally cooled around 2003, when Schwarzenegger entered politics and the two shared a cigar. Today, they’re close friends.

Stallone also shared a sobering detail about the cost of his action career: his stunt work on 2010’s“The Expendables”led to nine back operations and three neck fusions. Which’80s action movie is still your all-time favorite? Tell us in the comments.
