For twenty-two years, the story was that the 2004 Super Bowl reveal was an accident. According to Janet Jackson’s longtime designer Wayne Scot Lukas, it was the plan. In a new interview with TMZ Sports, Lukas said he designed the moment specifically to outdo the Britney Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera kiss from the 2003 MTV VMAs, saying,“We have to do something bigger. That’s how this became that.”
Lukas also spread the blame around. He says MTV producers were supposed to cut to black and didn’t, and that Jackson was meant to return backstage for a cover-up but disappeared instead. Then there’s Justin Timberlake. Lukas claims Timberlake never apologized to the design team and wasn’t invited to discuss the moment in an upcoming Apple TV docuseries.
So where does that leave us? If the reveal was intentional, the question flips from“what went wrong”to“who took the fall.”Jackson absorbed the fallout while Timberlake’s career kept climbing, which is exactly why this conversation refuses to die. Do you think the reveal was planned? Let us know in the comments.
