Twenty years after its release, Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black is back in the top 10 of four Billboard charts. The 20th-anniversary reissue, which arrived Oct. 23, pushed the album to No. 3 on Indie Store Album Sales and No. 4 on Vinyl Albums, with additional top-10 showings on Top Album Sales and Top R&B Albums. It also re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 42, earning 16,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. — a 185% increase — including 11,000 in pure album sales.

The reissue isn’t a bare-bones repackage. It includes previously unreleased b-sides, demos and a full live concert, giving longtime fans new material from an artist whose studio catalog spans just two albums. Back to Black originally peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2008, following Winehouse’s Grammy wins for record of the year, song of the year, best new artist and best pop vocal album. It remains her second and final studio album before her death in 2011.

The strong vinyl and indie-store performance puts Back to Black alongside other anniversary reissues climbing the charts right now, including My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade. It’s proof that physical formats and thoughtful reissues can still move the needle for catalog artists with devoted fanbases. Have you picked up the anniversary edition yet — and did the demos live up to the original?
