Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 5 is titled“Sayonara,”and it wastes zero time living up to that name. Assassin Jim, played by Kyle Soller, is killed in the episode’s cold open after a chaotic chain of events: he kidnaps Sid, she stabs Jane with a license plate, the car crashes, and Jim chases Sid into the woods. He tries to drown her in a lake. River intervenes, and together he and Sid hold Jim underwater until he’s gone. It’s brutal, it’s fast, and it’s exactly the kind of opening this show has made its signature.
The death lands as revenge, since Jim murdered fan-favorite J.K. Coe, played by Tom Brooke, back in Episode 4. That’s two major losses in two weeks, plus the season premiere reveal that David Cartwright had passed away. Slow Horses has never been precious about its cast, and Season 6 is making that very clear. Kyle Soller praised the stunt team for the physical, freezing, scrappy shoot, and the scene absolutely shows it.
One detail that makes it all weirder: Soller and Brooke are friends in real life, two buddies playing mortal enemies who both end up dead. New episodes of Slow Horses premiere Wednesdays on Apple TV.
