Selma Blair is breaking her silence after a mid-flight incident that ended in her arrest on October 11. The actress was taken into custody following an alleged outburst on a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York. According to reports, the pilot flagged a bloody nose and bite marks and requested medical assistance for flight attendants upon landing at JFK. Blair was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and pleaded not guilty on October 12. If convicted, she faces two to seven years.

Her legal team tells a different story. Blair’s attorney says the incident stemmed from a missed dose of her multiple sclerosis medication, combined with a fall, exhaustion, and altitude. Her spokesperson says Blair suffered a medical emergency on board, denies that she ever attempted to open the aircraft door, and says she never intended to harm anyone. The spokesperson also says Blair’s service dog was taken from her by authorities.

In her first public statement since the arrest, Blair said plainly,“There is much more to this story than has been reported.”The case is now raising bigger questions about how medical emergencies, disability, and celebrity intersect with the justice system. What do you think: should a medical emergency ever lead to criminal charges on a flight? Sound off in the comments.
