Chick-fil-A CEO's LGBTQ Answer Sparks Backlash: Did He Dodge the Question or Serve Up Hospitality?

Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy sat down for his first-ever broadcast interview on NBC’s Today show this week, and one answer got the entire internet talking. When host Craig Melvin asked about LGBTQ+ boycotts and the company’s controversial past, Cathy responded that the chain would love to, quote,“give them a great-tasting sandwich and give them great hospitality.”Media outlets slammed the response as evasive, and celebrities including Katie Couric, Chelsea Handler, and Valerie Bertinelli jumped in to criticize the interview.

The backlash is loud, but the numbers tell a different story. Chick-fil-A pulled in about 24 billion dollars in sales last year, and the company says it has provided more than 200 million meals to people in need over the past six years. So while critics call for boycotts, the drive-thru lines keep growing, which raises a bigger question about whether corporate values actually move consumer behavior.

For a lot of people, this story hits on something personal: faith, money, and whether you can separate a company’s leadership from the product you love. Cathy didn’t apologize and he didn’t attack anyone. He just invited critics to show up and eat. Whether that’s brave, smart, or a total dodge depends on who you ask.

So we want to know: does a CEO’s personal beliefs change whether you spend your money there? Sound off in the comments.
