Selma Blair pleaded not guilty Monday in Queens Criminal Court to two assault charges stemming from an incident aboard a Delta flight from LAX to JFK on October 11. According to reports, Blair was allegedly disruptive during the flight, injured two people, and at one point tried to open a plane door. She was restrained on board, taken to a hospital for evaluation, and later charged. The two assault counts involve a Port Authority police officer and a nurse at Jamaica Hospital. Bail was set at $20,000 cash or $60,000 bond, and she was released Monday.

Her lawyer, Shawn Barnes, says the incident was the result of a medical emergency, not intentional conduct. Blair has multiple sclerosis, and according to her legal team, she missed doses of a powerful medication during the flight and fell and hit her head, which led to severe confusion and disorientation.“This was not an intentional assault,”Barnes said. The FBI also issued a summons in connection with the flight, and Blair is due back in court on January 19, 2027.

The story raises bigger questions about how airlines and law enforcement respond when a passenger is in a health crisis at 35,000 feet. Crews have to keep everyone safe, and passengers in distress need medical help. Where those two responsibilities meet is where things get complicated. What do you think, should a situation like this be treated as a health matter, a legal matter, or both?
