A London jury at Southwark Crown Court found Russell Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday, following two days of deliberation. Brand was acquitted on two rape counts and one attempted indecent assault charge, but the guilty verdicts were enough to send him straight into custody. He’s set to be sentenced Monday, November 9.

The courtroom reaction told two very different stories. Brand himself stayed mostly expressionless, reportedly mouthing“I’m good”to his defense team as he was led away. Outside, his father, Ron Brand, told reporters he was“bemused and shocked,”calling the verdict“wrong”and“devastating.”Meanwhile, prosecutors were blunt about their case, describing Brand as predatory and accusing him of using his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes over incidents spanning 1999 to 2013.

The conviction closes a years-long legal chapter, but it opens a bigger conversation about fame, power, and consent. All eyes now turn to November 9, when a judge will decide what comes next for the comedian and actor. What do you think this verdict says about celebrity accountability? Sound off in the comments.
