RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr. on Breaking Bad, died by suicide at 34, his representative confirmed on Tuesday, October 13. On Friday, October 16, family, friends, and his Brownsville, Texas community gathered at the Mitte Cultural District for his funeral, where his younger sister Lacianne Carriere gave an emotional tribute that has resonated far beyond the room.

Carriere told mourners,“RJ Mitte was my older brother but I not only just lost a brother, I lost my father.”When Carriere was just two weeks old, their mother was paralyzed, and Mitte took on the role of parent for his younger sister. It’s a side of him many fans never saw, even as he built a public legacy as an advocate for disability representation, speaking openly about his own cerebral palsy.

Brownsville Police found Mitte at his residence after an emergency call around 12:50 p.m., and the cause and manner of death remain pending an ongoing investigation. Carriere closed her eulogy with a message for anyone struggling:“If anyone is struggling, please don’t feel like you’re alone. You’re never alone.”If you or someone you know needs support, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
