Chicago singer Peven Everett, the voice behind Gorillaz’s“Strobelite,”has made an emotional return to the stage after a lengthy battle with stage 4 lung cancer. Everett was diagnosed in 2024, and supporters launched a GoFundMe to help cover his treatment costs. In August 2026, he marked a major milestone by ringing the bell at Northwestern Hospital.
That milestone turned into a full-circle moment on October 8, when Everett joined Gorillaz at Chicago’s United Center. He performed“Strobelite”and covered Bobby Womack’s parts on“Stylo,”visibly moved as Damon Albarn embraced him on stage. Everett first collaborated with the band on their 2017 album“Humanz”and toured with them afterward, making this hometown return even sweeter.
In a message to fans, Everett said the show was the hardest he’s ever had to do, but that he’d do anything for Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett, and Gorillaz. He also gave thanks to God for“Grace and Mercy.”Gorillaz are currently on tour supporting their album“The Mountain,”but this Chicago moment is the one everyone’s talking about.
