Lawton is built around Fort Sill, so Veterans Day here is never just another date on the calendar. This year’s observance kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 11 with the city’s annual Veterans Day Celebration at City Hall, featuring a ceremony and a complimentary breakfast. Cameron University is hosting its own ceremony as well, with Fort Sill Garrison Commander Col. Jay Morgan as the keynote speaker and a free meal for veterans and active duty members. If you’ve noticed the thousands of American flags across campus, that’s a tradition that dates back to 2011, with more than 7,000 flags placed each year.
The observances continue with Steps Under Stars and Stripes, a 24-hour walk running from 12:45 p.m. Nov. 13 to 1 p.m. Nov. 14 at the lake near the Lawton Fort Sill Veterans Center. It’s a powerful way to spend a little time honoring those who served, whether you walk one lap or several.
And the restaurant deals are back. Applebee’s, Chili’s, Golden Corral, Outback and Texas Roadhouse are all offering free meals or specials for veterans. Just bring proof of service, which can be a military ID, a VA card or your discharge papers. Texas Roadhouse vouchers are redeemable through May 31, 2027, so there’s no pressure to use them right away. Which event on the list are you planning to attend this week?
