Lawton Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole in 2022 Aces & Eights Lounge Killing

It took almost four years, but justice has finally been served for the family of Louis“Javare”Lipscomb. On Friday, a Comanche County jury found Vernon Lorenzo Watkins Jr., 32, guilty of first-degree murder and firearm possession in the November 2022 shooting that claimed Lipscomb’s life outside the Aces&Eights Lounge in Lawton. District Judge Grant Sheperd imposed the jury’s recommendation: life without parole, plus 20 years, served consecutively.

The case was anything but straightforward. Watkins, also known as“Burgundy,”was the father of Lipscomb’s sister’s children, making the victim his own nephew’s uncle. A woman involved with both men took the stand, and even prosecutor Jill Oliver acknowledged the witness was imperfect, saying,“You don’t get to pick your witnesses. Nobody’s perfect.”But the physical evidence was compelling. Forensic experts matched bullet casings from a prior incident to the murder scene, and security video plus witness accounts placed Watkins at the shooting. The murder weapon itself was never recovered.

The jury deliberated for about three hours before delivering the verdict. In a message sent before the killing, Watkins told Lipscomb’s sister,“I’m gonna set the example with your brother. Bye. Stay dangerous.”That message, along with the ballistics and video, painted a picture the jury couldn’t ignore.
