Joe Manganiello Says Tom Cruise May Have Blocked His Jack Reacher Casting

Joe Manganiello is opening up about a major role that got away, and his theory involves Tom Cruise. In his new memoir Bloodlines, Manganiello writes that he was told he was the top choice for Amazon’s Jack Reacher series back in January 2020. Lee Child, the author behind the books, reportedly called him the closest thing to Reacher he’d ever met. But according to Manganiello, the casting stalled when Amazon MGM Studios head Jen Salke, who wasn’t part of the process, refused to approve him and reportedly favored Tom Welling instead.

Manganiello’s team speculated that Tom Cruise, who produced the earlier Reacher films, might have vetoed him. The theory? Cruise briefly dated Sofia Vergara in 2005, and she was married to Manganiello at the time. Manganiello is quick to note this was only speculation and nobody ever told him what actually happened. The role ultimately went to Alan Ritchson, who has since become the face of the franchise. Reacher is currently filming Season 5 and has already been renewed for Season 6.

Whether or not Cruise was involved, this story shines a light on how complicated Hollywood casting can be. Talent, fan support, and even the author’s approval don’t always guarantee the part. Sometimes decisions get made in rooms actors never step into. Bloodlines is available October 13.

What do you think? Did Manganiello deserve a shot at Reacher, or was Alan Ritchson always the right call?
