Hyrox Athlete Wins Race While Sick, Leaves Mess on Shared Equipment: Inside the Viral Backlash

Joanna Wietrzyk, a 24-year-old Australian athlete, finished first at a Hyrox competition in Beijing in 1 hour, 1 minute, and 23 seconds. She also dealt with diarrhea during the race, and video of the incident quickly spread across social media. Her post afterward read,“Go hard or go home they say… a win is a win,”which only added fuel to a comment section already fighting over whether she should have stopped.

The backlash wasn’t really about her. It was about shared equipment. Photos and clips show her using rowing machines and kettlebells without any pause or intervention from organizers, and spectators started asking who was responsible for cleaning up before the next competitor touched the same gear. Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fuerste issued an apology, saying,“I apologize to all that were directly or indirectly affected, as well as to everyone who felt like we did not handle the situation like we should have.”He confirmed new rules are now in place.

What’s getting lost under the jokes is how normal this is. Dr. Dana Zalkin, a gastroenterologist at Mount Sinai, has noted that somewhere between 30 and 90 percent of endurance athletes experience gastrointestinal issues during exercise. So the real conversation isn’t about one athlete’s bad day. It’s about whether mass-participation events are prepared for something that happens this often. Should organizers have a protocol ready, or is that on the athlete to self-report? Tell us what you think in the comments.
