The investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death officially concluded on October 28, 2026, more than two months after the actress was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. She was 36. Greenville police closed the case after the coroner ruled her cause of death as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol and Quetiapine on September 22, with the manner of death an accident. An autopsy found no signs of trauma.
According to reporting on the case, her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother were at the scene and provided police with a bag of her medication. The DEA also looked into the circumstances after reports of an apparent overdose and cardiac arrest. Her family, ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko and Hickerson have all publicly commented on the loss, with Klitschko saying he will always speak of her mother with respect to their daughter Kaya and make sure she remembers who she was.
Panettiere was a familiar screen presence from Heroes and Nashville, and her long public struggle with postpartum depression and addiction makes her death a touchpoint for conversations about fentanyl, treatment and grief. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, help is available through the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357.
