Greta Gerwig's Narnia Trailer Uses "Stairway to Heaven," and Meryl Streep as Aslan Has Fans Divided

Netflix just released the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,”and it’s already the most talked-about trailer of the year. Gerwig chose Led Zeppelin’s“Stairway to Heaven”to score it, telling audiences the film is about a spiritual journey, the true path of enlightenment, and the false idols that pull you the wrong way. It’s a bold pairing, and it sets the tone for a Narnia that looks nothing like the ones we grew up with.

The bigger lightning rod is the casting. Meryl Streep is voicing Aslan, and some Christian commentators have pushed back hard, comparing the choice to“Tashlan,”the false deity from Lewis’books. But C.S. Lewis’stepsons, David and Douglas Gresham, released a statement saying they’re thrilled to work with Gerwig, which is about as strong an endorsement as an adaptation can get. Gerwig also shifts the story from 1900 to the 1950s, following Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer as they witness Aslan singing Narnia into existence.

The film lands in theaters February 12, 2027, so there’s plenty of time for this debate to rage on. What do you think: is“Stairway to Heaven”the perfect Narnia soundtrack, or should Gerwig have gone somewhere else entirely?
