Angel Studios just gave fans an early look at“Drummer Boy,”a Revolutionary War musical that’s anything but your typical historical drama. The film follows two brothers who end up on opposite sides of the war, along with an enslaved woman searching for freedom, all tied together by original music that drives the emotional weight of the story. It opens exclusively in theaters on November 6.
The cast is stacked. Joel and Luke Smallbone from for KING + COUNTRY star in the film, with Joel co-directing alongside his brother Ben Smallbone. Charles Esten, known for his roles on“Nashville”and“Outer Banks,”also stars and performs a song called“Same Blood.”The ensemble includes Lucas Leach, India Brown, Ioan Gruffudd, Melora Hardin, and Iain Glen. At the advance screening Q&A, Joel shared that working on the project felt like getting to have his cake and eat it, combining his love for music and film. Charles added that music allows storytellers to drop into another level that dialogue alone can’t reach.
With themes of faith, freedom, forgiveness, and family,“Drummer Boy”is aiming to be more than just entertainment. It’s a story about what divides us and what brings us back together, set against one of the most pivotal moments in American history. Will you be checking it out when it hits theaters?
