David Bowie shot a concert film in 1978, decided he didn’t like how it looked, and buried it. Nearly fifty years later, that footage is getting a full immersive release. Bowie played three Earl’s Court shows in London during the Isolar II World Tour in June 1978, and filmmaker David Hemmings captured all of it on 35mm. Bowie’s original vision was to screen the footage in unconventional spaces as an alternative to touring. Instead, he shelved it and released Stage as a live album.
Brett Morgen, the director behind Moonage Daydream, discovered the footage while working through Bowie’s archives and spent years remastering and color grading it for a multi-screen experience. The show premieres February 14th, 2027, at Berlin’s Uber Arena, with lighting by Patrick Woodroffe and immersive audio mixed by Paul Massey. The venue sits near Hansa Studios, where“Heroes”and parts of Low were recorded, making the Berlin debut feel like a full-circle moment.
Bowie himself once admitted the footage looked“pretty good”and suspected it would surface eventually. That day is finally coming. Would you go see an immersive Bowie show if it toured to your city? Let us know.
