Shane Gillis hosted SNL this past weekend, and a bit from his opening monologue is still blowing up days later. During the set, Gillis joked about women who wear short shorts to the gym, calling them“whores.”The moment aired live on national television, and it didn’t take long for the backlash to build.
Dan Levy, who hosted SNL himself in 2021 and created Schitt’s Creek, responded with an Instagram Reel on Sunday evening. He said he was speechless that something like that could exist on live national television, and he pushed back on the premise directly: women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores, it makes the men calling them misogynists. Levy also argued that men’s silence and complacency create an environment where women are sexually assaulted. His post quickly drew support from Reese Witherspoon, Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Alba, Hannah Einbinder, Maggie Rogers, Cat Power and Garbage, all of whom liked or reshared it.
The story has reignited a bigger conversation about where comedy crosses the line, whether SNL should have cut the joke, and what accountability looks like when one man publicly calls out another. So we want to know: do you think SNL should have censored Gillis’monologue, or was it fair game?
