Céline Dion Returns to the Stage in Paris After Stiff Person Syndrome Battle

Céline Dion opened her 26-date Paris residency at Paris La Défense Arena on Saturday, marking her first full return to the stage since being diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in December 2022. She became emotional as the crowd applauded, singing through tears before telling the audience,“I promised not to cry. Tonight I want to sing for you, for me, for life.”Later in the show she performed her 1997 hit“My Heart Will Go On.”Her diagnosis forced her to cancel the Courage world tour in May 2023, and she announced the residency in March while celebrating her birthday.

Getting back to performing took serious work. Dion prepared with Pilates, ballet, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy, rebuilding both her voice and her body for this run of shows. She told the crowd,“If I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me,”a line that landed even harder knowing how long the road back was.

The residency runs 26 dates, and opening night set the emotional bar about as high as it gets.
