Wrong Turn, Right Moment: How a GPS Glitch Saved a Georgia Foster Family of 14

A driver named Casey was traveling through Chattooga County, Georgia, when his GPS sent him down Highway 114 south of Lyerly, a road he had never driven before. That detour changed everything. He spotted smoke rising from a house, arrived before anyone else, woke homeowner James Burke, and helped get 11 children and one grandchild out of the home before fire destroyed it and two cars.

What makes the rescue even more remarkable is who the Burkes are. James and Larita Burke have fostered around 500 children over the years, building a home around kids who needed one. Many of the children from the house have since moved to other foster homes, and the family is now searching for a rental large enough for 14 people while they rebuild. Community support has been immediate, with neighbors and strangers stepping in the way the Burkes have stepped up for decades.

Casey later reflected that something was guiding him down that road, a path he’d never taken before. Whether you call it luck, timing, or something bigger, one wrong turn kept 12 people safe. Have you ever had a wrong turn or detour change everything? Tell us in the comments.
