A 1973 Message in a Bottle Just Found Its Way Home to a Grieving Sister

A routine wetland cleanup in New Jersey turned into something unforgettable when John Kauterman pulled an old Coca-Cola bottle out of the mud. Inside was a handwritten note dated August 20, 1973, telling a made-up story about sponge fishermen forcing the writer to dive for them. Kauterman, co-founder of the Tidelands Initiative, shared the note on Facebook and tracked down the family behind it.

The writers were Allison Spencer and her sister Laurie, who dreamed up the tall tale as kids. Laurie passed away from breast cancer nine years ago, so the note made its way back to Allison in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She called the return“very miraculous”and“a wonderful, special thing,”a small but meaningful connection to the sister she still misses.

Fifty-three years, a bottle, and one Facebook post added up to a moment this family will never forget. It’s a reminder that the little things we make as kids can outlive us in the best way. Got a childhood keepsake you’d love to see resurface? Tell us in the comments.
