On Saturday night, the Grammy-winning singer opened a 16-show residency at Plenitude Arena in Paris, marking her first full return to the stage since revealing her stiff person syndrome diagnosis in 2022. She opened with the French song“On Ne Change Pas”and got visibly emotional, telling the crowd she had promised herself not to cry before thanking them for coming.

Stiff person syndrome is a rare neurological condition that causes stiff limbs and severe muscle spasms, and Celine has said it affected both her walking and her vocal cords. Her touring plans were disrupted first by the pandemic in 2020 and then by the diagnosis, though she did perform at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
