The wait is almost over. Netflix’s“A Different World”reboot premieres Thursday, Sept. 24, and this time the story centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne. Maleah Joi Moon takes on the lead role, with Debbie Allen executive producing and Felicia Pride serving as showrunner.
What makes the timing wild is the real-world echo. During the original series’1987–1993 run, HBCU enrollment rose roughly 25%, and Black college enrollment jumped nearly 40%. From 2019 to 2024, 42 of 101 HBCUs have seen enrollment growth. Howard University grew 50%, Morgan State 42%, Virginia State 27%, and Elizabeth City State 23%.
Debbie Allen says there has never been a better time to hear and see where young Black America is. Showrunner Felicia Pride frames the reboot around one question: what does it mean to be young and Black and gifted in this moment? If the original show is any indication, TV doesn’t just reflect culture, it can help shape what comes next.
