Wendi McLendon-Covey Responds to Jeff Garlin's Bipolar Claim About His 'Goldbergs' Exit: "Huh"

Jeff Garlin is finally explaining his final years on“The Goldbergs,”and his former TV wife is not letting it slide. On the Daily Beast’s“Obsessed”podcast, Garlin said he was undiagnosed bipolar during his last stretch on the ABC sitcom, describing himself as miserable, withdrawn, manic, and sometimes“really, really mean.”He claims that behavior is what led to his 2021 exit, and he said it left Wendi McLendon-Covey“very resentful.”

McLendon-Covey’s response came fast and brief. After seeing a clip of the interview on Instagram, she commented a single word:“Huh.”She then added that she, the crew, the other actors, the writers, and the executives remember his time on set“very differently.”It’s a pointed statement from someone who has kept quiet about Garlin for years, and it lands differently when you remember he left amid misconduct and“abusive”behavior allegations, with McLendon-Covey telling Andy Cohen back in 2023 that his departure“was a long time coming.”

So the two accounts sit side by side. Garlin frames his exit around an undiagnosed condition and a difficult personal stretch. His former castmate frames it around a workplace full of people who experienced those same years from the other side. Diagnoses can explain a lot, but they don’t automatically rewrite what a crew lived through, and that tension is exactly why this story keeps getting attention five years after he left the show.
