West Lawton traffic is about to see two big changes. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation expects to open bids later this month on the new US-62 interchange at Goodyear Boulevard. The project is 95% designed, and the latest estimate puts it at $24 million, with ODOT covering 80% and the City of Lawton covering 20%. City Public Utilities Director Rusty Whisenhunt says the interchange is essential: with 400 to 500 trucks a day serving the Oklahoma Southwest Rail Industrial Park, city streets can’t keep absorbing that wear.
Closer to home for many drivers, the Lee Boulevard rehabilitation between 38th and 52nd streets is about two-thirds complete. That $3.98 million project should finish in late January or early February. Good timing, too: an ODOT count on that mile-long section last year tallied almost 8,000 vehicles a day.
Both projects matter beyond the pavement. The industrial park keeps adding jobs and tenants, and better truck routing means neighborhoods and commuters feel less of the load. What’s the one Lawton road you’d fix next if you had the say? Let us know on our Facebook page.
