Todrick Hall has never been the type to do things halfway, and his new Off-Broadway musical“Midnight”proves it. He wrote it, directed it, choreographed it, and stars in it. The show is running at the Daryl Roth Theatre in New York City through November 8, with Scooter Braun and former Disney CEO Bob Chapek listed as producers.
Set in the 19th-century American South,“Midnight”follows twelve interconnected characters exploring love, race, class, and identity, backed by an original score that pulls from gospel, R&B, pop, rock, and musical theater. Early audiences have been vocal. Lea Michele said she cried the entire show, while Tamyra Gray said she was forever changed and her heart and soul had been ripped open. Danielle Brooks also showed up to support, and the comparisons to early“Hamilton”performances at The Public Theater keep piling up.
Braun and Hall reuniting behind this project signals bigger things may be coming. Off-Broadway runs are often a test drive, and with this much star power and word-of-mouth heat, a longer life for“Midnight”feels less like a question and more like a countdown.
