This Car Seat Sticker Tears Off Into a Hospital Wristband, and It Was Born From a Real Tragedy

In December 2022, a 47-car pileup on the Ohio Turnpike during a winter storm killed Julie Roth and left her two young children, Ayla and Rory, hospitalized and unidentified for hours. With their mother unresponsive, hospital staff had no way to quickly confirm their names, blood types, allergies, or who to call. Their father waited, not knowing where they were or what condition they were in. That gap, those hours of not knowing, is what Julie’s sister set out to close.

The result is the Roth ID Tag: an adhesive sticker that attaches permanently to a car seat’s fabric. It includes a tear-off tab that converts into a hospital wristband carrying emergency medical details and contact information, plus a QR code that links to a registration page. Child Passenger Safety Technicians approved the design, and fire, police, and highway safety agencies across several states have endorsed it. A fire captain from Bellevue, Ohio, put it simply: he can recall countless situations where the Roth ID Tag would have made the scenario more manageable.

The tag is available at Target, Walmart, and Amazon, which means this isn’t some niche product you have to hunt down. It’s sitting in the same aisles where you already shop. For parents, it’s a low-cost way to make sure that if the worst happens, your child’s identity and medical needs aren’t a mystery to the people trying to help them.

Would you add one to your child’s car seat? Let us know in the comments.
