Brady Rogers just pulled off one of the most unlikely campaign wins we’ve seen. Running for Kelowna City Council against 36 other candidates, the former robotics engineer and 3D-printing shop owner built his entire campaign around admitting he didn’t really want the job. His yard signs read“I barely want to do this”and“Under 60!”He told voters he doesn’t like meetings, doesn’t like stuffy offices, and wasn’t sure he was qualified. Then he finished fourth and beat three incumbents.
The jokes worked because they weren’t the whole story. Rogers ran on real policy too, with genuine positions on homelessness spending and how the city taxes land versus building improvements. The humor drew people in, and the substance gave them a reason to actually vote for him. He credits the win to authenticity, and it’s hard to argue with the results.
So now the guy who shrugged his way into office has to show up for all those meetings he said he hates. Does wanting the job less make you better at it? Would you vote for a candidate who was this honest about their lack of enthusiasm?
