Texas diesel prices are creeping right up against a record. AAA Texas puts the statewide average at $5.93 a gallon, just four cents below the all-time high of $5.97 set on September 19. Regular gas in Texas is averaging $3.95, while the national averages sit at $4.48 for regular and $6.50 for diesel.
The surprising part is what’s actually driving the diesel spike. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan points to refining costs rather than crude oil, with oil hovering around $95 a barrel and roughly $4 of every diesel gallon unrelated to crude prices at all. That matters locally because truckers and haulers pass those costs along, which means higher prices on delivered goods here in Lawton and across Comanche County.
There is some hope on the horizon. Midland and Odessa both saw regular gas drop 19 and 18 cents this week, proof that prices can fall quickly when supply loosens up.
