A Comanche County case that began with a Christmas night overdose in 2024 took another turn this week. Mariah Jade Brewer, 26, filed a motion Thursday to withdraw the blind guilty plea she entered October 27 for the fentanyl death of Chyna Alexander, also 26. Brewer had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, drug distribution, conspiracy and unlawful telephone use. Judge Grant Sheperd sentenced her to 20 years with eight to serve and 12 suspended, plus $7,096.25 in fines, fees and restitution, with all counts running concurrently.

In the motion, Brewer argues she wasn’t fully informed of the plea’s consequences and says former defense attorney Evan Watson coerced her into moving forward with a blind plea. She also notes no pre-sentence investigation was ordered before sentencing. A blind plea means a defendant admits guilt without a negotiated agreement, leaving the sentence entirely up to the judge. Prosecutors say Alexander paid Brewer through CashApp, while co-defendant Rebecca Gonzalez, 35, delivered $60 worth of fentanyl on Christmas night 2024. Gonzalez is free on $50,000 bond and set for trial in the January/February 2027 jury docket.

For families across Lawton and the Fort Sill community, the case is a hard reminder of how fentanyl reaches into homes, and how quickly a holiday can turn into a loss that never goes away. What do you think the judge should do with Brewer’s request?
