At 78, Ted Danson had already lived a pretty full life. A two-time Emmy winner, a legendary run on Cheers, a thriving career that never really quit. But nothing quite teaches you about mortality like a health scare that comes out of nowhere.

On Wednesday, May 6, the beloved actor opened up on his“Where Everybody Knows Your Name”podcast about a previously undisclosed medical issue. He didn’t get into specifics—doctors and privacy first—but his take on what it meant is worth paying attention to. Danson called it“the best thing that could have happened”to him. Not because the scare itself was good, obviously. But because it yanked him out of the illusion that he’d somehow skipped his turn in line.

“Mortality, it’s the real deal,”he said during a conversation with actress Valerie Bertinelli, who’s navigated her own health challenges.“Ted Danson doesn’t get a free pass.”That’s the kind of clarity that usually takes a serious jolt to unlock. And instead of shying away from it, he’s letting it reshape how he moves through his days. He and his wife of over 30 years, Mary Steenburgen, are now meditating twice daily together. Not the aspirational“I talk about meditating”kind that he admits he used to fake—the real thing. He’s more present with her. He’s curious about other people in a way he wasn’t before.

This isn’t a story about someone who escaped death and came back grateful. It’s about someone who got a warning—you don’t know how much time you have—and actually listened. These days, a lot of people treat that wisdom like a meme and move on. Danson seems to be doing the harder work of actually living it.

The irony? His recent Netflix comedy series A Man on the Inside, which was renewed for a third season in February, now gives him and Steenburgen the rare chance to work together as onscreen lovers. Life and art don’t always line up like that. When they do, especially after a moment of reckoning, it means something.
