Surveillance Blurry Under the Tent: Defense Pokes Holes in Karmelo Anthony Murder Case

The centerpiece of the prosecution’s case against Karmelo Anthony hinges on a grainy surveillance video that prosecutors claim shows him fighting Austin Metcalf under a tent at a 2025 Texas high school track meet — a struggle that allegedly lasted four minutes and ended with a fatal stabbing. But here’s the problem: the video is so unclear that even the state’s own expert had to concede a pretty damning limitation.

Mark Porter, a forensic video analyst for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, took the stand as the prosecution’s first witness. He walked jurors through the footage, claiming it showed the violent confrontation between the two. But when defense attorney Toby Shook cross-examined him, Porter admitted something critical: the video is composed of still images captured from a distance, making it impossible to see facial details, mouth movements, or head motions. Translation? You can’t actually tell what’s happening under that tent with any real clarity.

When Shook asked directly,“You really can’t tell what people are doing under the tent, can you?”— Porter agreed. That’s a massive crack in the foundation of the prosecution’s visual evidence. If you can’t see faces, can’t read expressions, can’t observe the specifics of what two people are actually doing, how confident can a jury really be about the identification or the sequence of events?

The timing of this trial adds another layer of scrutiny. Karmelo’s case kicked off this week after multiple potential jurors were dismissed due to age and racial biases, and notably, there are no Black jurors on the jury. Karmelo has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces life in prison — which makes the quality of evidence and the clarity of that video more critical than ever. Right now, the prosecution’s strongest visual exhibit is something its own expert can barely defend.
