The Batman Part II just went through a plot twist nobody saw coming, and it happened entirely behind the camera. Matt Reeves, who directed the first film, had to step away from production for a family matter. Instead of halting the shoot or pushing the release, Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh stepped in to finish principal photography. Soderbergh didn’t wait to be asked either. He approached Reeves directly about helping, and Reeves remains involved with the film from a distance.

Reeves addressed the news himself on X, writing that he is not leaving The Batman Part II and that he is profoundly grateful to Soderbergh for coming to his aid during a challenging time. Soderbergh returned the praise, calling Reeves’work on The Batman stunning, intentional, specific and rigorously coherent. Robert Pattinson is still starring as Batman, with Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch also in the cast. The film is still set for a February 2028 release.

Director changes mid-production are rare at this scale, which is exactly why film fans are so locked in on this story. It also raises some fun questions about what a Soderbergh-finished Batman movie even feels like. The man behind Oceans Eleven, Contagion and Magic Mike has a very different visual rhythm than Reeves, even if he’s stepping in to serve the existing vision. So what do you think: does a Steven Soderbergh-assisted Batman have you more excited for 2028, or are you nervous about the switch?
