Sour Patch Kids Beat Reese's as Texas's Top Halloween Candy, and Lawton Shoppers Are Right on the Border

Texas has spoken, or at least its shopping carts have. Bulk candy sales show Sour Patch Kids as the number one Halloween purchase in the Lone Star State with over 974,000 pounds sold annually. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups land second around 920,000 pounds, and Starburst take third with more than 920,000 pounds of their own. Fruit and sour flavors hold the top spots, and that pattern barely moves from year to year.

There’s a split worth noting. Reese’s leads all candy ordered through DoorDash, which suggests chocolate is what people reach for when they’re buying late and buying for themselves. Store shelves tell a different story, where the bulk bags headed for trick-or-treat bowls lean sour and fruity. Two habits, one holiday.

Living in Lawton, we’re close enough to the Texas line that these numbers probably describe half the carts in the aisle this week. Whether you’re stocking up for the neighborhood or making a Friday afternoon dash, the regional favorite is clear. So which candy would you put above Sour Patch Kids? Tell us on the station Facebook page and we’ll read the best answers on air.
